He Did It! Macks’ First Sign

He Did It! Macks’ First Sign

The first time that I decided that I wanted to teach my children sign language, my husband thought I was crazy for starting as early as I did. Every time that I would nurse our then newborn daughter, I would give her the “milk” signal. I continued to do this at every nursing session for the first nine months.AdvertisementLo and behold, at nine months old, baby shoes, Harlan gave us the milk signal. It was one a moment that I’ll never forget and a great accomplishment as a mother. When Macks was born, I immediately started signing with him. Since milk is about the only thing that he’s getting right now, milk is the sign that he sees most often. Sometimes when I give him the signal as we sit down and start to nurse, he will just grab my hand to feel the movement. Other times he looks at me like I am crazy and continues nursing as if I am doing some weird thing in his face. The other day I sat down to feed Macks, and once we got settled in, I started to sign and say “milk” to him. But rather than looking at me or grabbing my hand, he stuck his hand up in the air and started to mimic my sign. It was the most incredible thing to watch. To make sure that he really was doing the sign, I took a little bit of a break and then went back to signing–and sure enough, he lifted his hand in the air and did the same thing. He’s done it at least once a day since then.We always want to do a good job of teaching our children little things to get them throughout life. Sometimes we don’t see the result of our hard work unit much later on when our children are older. So every once in a while, it’s nice to see that some of our hard work and dedication to teaching our children pays off.Way to go,baby care, Macks!
