New Renewable Energy Courses at
Kankakee Community College

Recognizing that the Renewable Energy (RE) field is primarily the realm of the electrician, Kankakee Community College modified its existing electrical technology program, adding a RE emphasis/specialization. This involves the creation and offering of four new courses, three of which are hands-on, lab-based courses in: solar-thermal technology, solar-PV technology, and small-wind energy technology.

These courses will broaden the skills-set of KCC's electrical technology graduates, widening their opportunities for employment and specifically making them employable in a vital, emerging field. The four new renewable energy courses in KCC's new Associates Degree in Electrical Technology are based on NABCEP competencies and students end each course by taking the Precertification Test of Knowledge, giving them a third party certification, along with their hands-on training.

Kankakee Community College's unique approach to RE education has been recognized by the National Science Foundation with a recent award of a NSF/ATE planning grant.
